Homewood (23-2) falls to Bucaplaa in title game |
ORLANDO, FLA.- Homewood jumped to a nine-point second-quarter lead and had a shot at a game-tying
three at the end, but couldn't hang on in a 45-42 title game loss to Bucaplaa, PR Thursday in the championship game of the 36th annual International Small Fry Tournament at Disney's Wide World of Sports.
The Vikings (23-2), who fell to 2-2 in title contests, missed nine free throws and had 21 turnovers in the contest. Homewood's all-time leading scorer Donell Cooper led the
Vikings with 13 points and five rebounds, while Roosevelt Green added 10 points and Mike Fitzgerald collected nine points. Joey Spesia ripped down five rebounds and Malik Thigpen added three assists and two
steals. Bucaplaa, which lost last year's title contest to St. Rocco, won its second International crown (1986). Meanwhile, Viking Donell Cooper won the International
Three-Point competition, joining Eric Woerheide (1996) and Vance Cooksey (2001) as previous winners. Homewood 48, And One 44-
Donell Cooper tied an all-time Homewood record with 29 points, as Homewood rebounded from a six-point second-half deficit to advance to its fourth championship game. Homewood (23-1), which
avenged its lone loss of the season, will await the winner of St. Rocco vs. Bucaplaa A, Puerto Rico in Thursday's 3 p.m. championship contest. The Vikings won International crowns in 1985 and 2000. The
Vikings hit all six of their free throws in the final stanza, as Mike Fitzgerald's three in a row started Homewood's comeback. Roosevelt Green (six points, four rebounds) scored the clincher in the game's
closing seconds on a pass from Cooper (three steals, two assists). The decision also avenged a loss to And 1 in last year's International third place contest.
Homewood 51, Hatillo, PR 28- Malik Thigpen was 5-for-7 from the field and 5-for-5 from the foul line to lead Homewood with 15 points, as the Vikings (22-1)
advanced to their second straight Final Four. Donell Cooper added 11 points, seven rebounds, four steals and three assists for Homewood, which didn't allow double
digits in any quarter. Roosevelt Green also scored nine for Homewood, which has advanced to the Final Four in half of its six Orlando visits.
Homewood awaits Chicago Heights or And 1 in a 12:30 p.m. semifinal Wednesday. Homewood 55, Newark Boys & Girls 18- Roosevelt Green paced 10 different scorers,
including three in double figures, with 15 points and eight rebounds to ignite Homewood (21-2) into the quarterfinals. The Vikings limited Newark to just four
second-half points in winning their 13th straight contest and fourth opener in five years at Orlando. Joey Spesia added 10 points for Homewood, while Donell Cooper
collected 10 points, four steals and five assists. Corey Jumper and Anthony Frezza each chipped in five points, the latter also grabbing four rebounds. Michael McWhorter also grabbed six rebounds.
Homewood used a 16-4 second-quarter margin to take a 34-14 command into halftime. |
